There are several reasons for such a combination, including three most important ones:
1. Predators often attack bait from below (especially pike); the greater the mass (cross-sectional area of the lure), the higher the probability that the fish will not take the entire bait in the first phase of the attack; if the hook of the jig head does not immediately get into the mouth, and the predator does not improve its grip, our hookset will likely be in vain;
2. A long hook stiffens the lure, impairs its action, and results in fewer bites; additionally, there is the known fact that many predators strongly prefer to strike near the head of their potential prey, and in this area, our lure would not be armed at that time;
3. A relatively short hook that allows the lure to work well, on the other hand, leads to losing fish that chase the lure, trying to catch it from the tail. These problems are solved by a good rig. Simply arm the lure with an optimal jig head for its action, adding a leader of the appropriate length with a treble hook as a supplement.
