Digital Control is a microprocessor-based system, designed specifically to control spool rotation speed during the cast, in order to minimize the risk of line or braid tangles. This microscopic computer does not require power – the small amount of energy needed for its proper operation is generated during casting and retrieving, and then stored in the device. Depending on the reel's class, Shimano offers different versions of the system. The Curado DC 151 is equipped with the i-DC4 processor version, with four pre-programmed braking modes.
How does this work in practice? From the very first cast, the DC system, using magnets built into the side panel, controls the spool by calculating its speed up to 1000 times per second. The angler's task is only to set the mechanical spool tension (standard side knob as in any multiplier reel) as accurately as possible, and select one of the modes on the side panel (1-2-3-4). Depending on the selected mode, the spool braking force by the digital system will be accordingly lower (1) or higher (4). When casting with wind or in calm weather, we suggest using mode (2) at first, and after getting better acquainted with the multiplier, switch to mode (1) for maximum casting distance. When casting against the wind, we suggest using mode (4) at first, and after getting better acquainted with the functionality, use (3) or (4), depending on the wind strength.
In addition to the unique DC system, this multiplier reel represents a whole range of Shimano's best technologies. The body is made of aluminum – cold-forged from a single piece of metal using HAGANE technology. We also find the X-SHIP drive supported by additional bearings and the revolutionary MicroModule system, which uses precision gears with very fine teeth. These two technologies, combined with 6 shielded bearings, generate high winding power and quiet, pleasant operation. The strong drag with carbon washers ensures a smooth fight with every fish.
